Custom field for IPN Options

I create subscriptions through the CreateRecurringPaymentsProfile call.
Can I use the PROFILEREFERENCE field of the CreateRecurringPaymentsProfile call to store custom value that will be sent back in IPN message?
Does the 'invoice' field of the IPN message contain this custom value then?

Can I use integer for the invoice number or it should contain letters?
