Do I need IPN Options

I want to get donation information, process the donation at PayPal, and then when the donation is successful email donation details to the charity.
Some of the details are not needed by PayPal.

I can use asp to pass the info to my thank you page but am not sure I will get to the thank you page.

Is IPN required?

If so, is a secure page for credit card info required.
