Can anyone advise as to if a subscription is created by a subscription button that I have added a custom field to, when a subscription renews is the custom value passed via IPN again (ie. is the custom field stored by paypal with the subscription).

The IPN will get hit for any subscription event including cancellations and the 'custom' variable is passed in all of them.
