Hello,

I am trying to add a subscription line item and a product line item to a shopping cart via one buy now button. Is there a way to do this?

not with Website Payments Standard. Subscriptions with Website Payments Standard require the use of a specific button using the "cmd" variable. If you want to have subscriptions and items in the same cart you would have to use Website Payments Pro with Recurring Payments API's.
