Hi I am new to this forum and I'm glad I've found this site. I really need some help here and I'm hoping someone here could help me. I'm with Paypal and trying to figure out this password management script. I've downloaded the perl script. It is to go to my tripod webserver. I've tried to read the info on the script. I am totally getting confused. How do i do the .htaccess or the .htpassword files. where do they go. what does the cgi bin have to do with this all? all this configuring that im reading from people is stuff i don't understand. Is there somewhere i can just go from the very beginning in layman's terms and just take this one step at a time with easier to understand words? I went to the eliteweaver click and build interface.. http://www.eliteweaver.co.uk/passpal/ and i tried to do that., but i didn't know what it meant by Members File (Absolute path to your unix .htpasswd members file.) Am i supposed to be at some point already before i do this interface thing? I'm so very sorry for all the questions but I've been at this for almost 2 days and with all the work i have done already on this site, I think I've filled my brain up and im just not getting it. I would greatly appreciate any help at all for someone to help me get this thing off the ground. Thank you very much for all your time domino/laura

Here's the concept: The password management script is going to find out (from PayPal) that a payment has been made to your account (for access to your information resource, I presume). Once the script confirms that a payment has been made it is going to add an entry in your .htpassword file that corresponds to the new subscriber. Here is a line from my .htpassword file:

pp-housedye:PKhyorf/SkQ1A

In this case, "pp-housedye" is the randomly generated username provided by PayPal; "PKhyorf/SkQ1A" is the (encrypted) password.

To make this work, your Web server must be configured to consult the .htpassword file when deciding if it should let your new subscriber in to your information resource. I don't know about Tripod; does Tripod offer this feature? Not all Web hosting services do.
