notifying your ecommerce server payment complete Options

anyone have advice on how you work this scenario? user comes to my company ecommerce site, they are ready to buy (off of my shopping cart engine) , they paypal it, Paypal IPN and my server verify payment, but now how do I keep state on their shopping cart page showing their payment is completed and so I can redirect them to their "final" shopping page? thanks in advance

Create an ID and send it through PayPal as "item_number" or if you're absolutely certain it will be unique, as "invoice". It will be returned to you in the IPN so you can match back.
